Dear CHS Families

Late yesterday the NJ Department of Education issued new guidance regarding primary election sites, which includes Columbia High School. According to the NJDOE, “As the State has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 transmission, and due to the increased number of individuals entering school facilities used to vote during school hours,” schools can move to “virtual or remote instruction” for the day. Therefore, this Tuesday, June 7, will be a virtual school day of synchronous instruction with classes following our regular schedule.

We understand that this may be a challenge for some, however, as shared above, this information was just released from NJDOE yesterday. I made this decision based on several important factors:

  1. Columbia High School, unlike other schools in the District, has not held voting on its campus while students have been in session. We have taken over that responsibility with the referendum construction impacting our elementary schools. This November we held voting and it went smoothly without students and we will do so again next November during our Fall Break.
  2. Going virtual will allow voting to be more accessible (as it will be in the cafeteria again as opposed to the main gym). Voters will also be allowed to park on campus now as well.
  3. Our COVID numbers are the highest in the District and we want to ensure that they do not increase as we approach big events like prom and finals.  We did see an increase in numbers over the past two weeks and the health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority.
  4. Our faculty did a great job shifting to virtual instruction in late December and we believe that this one-day transition to virtual learning will be just as seamless.

On Monday, our faculty will remind students of their online links for Tuesday and we will send out a copy of our regular schedule to remind students of their class times. We will also continue to hold two events in-person that day on campus that were planned for June 7th  — the art field trip and Senior Athletic Signing Day. If your child is participating in those events, they will receive more information on that on Monday. All other students will need to access their classes online from home.

I thank you in advance for your understanding. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
